Fresh produce just tastes better. And thanks to two powerful programs, SNAP Market Match and the Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program, Alaskans across the state can bring home more local fruits, veggies, and herbs without stretching their food budget.
If you shop with SNAP (formerly food stamps), you can double your buying power at participating farmers markets all season long. Here’s how it works:
Spend up to $40 with your Quest Card
Get up to $40 more in free fruits and vegetables
Repeat every week
That means $40 turns into $80 in fresh, local produce grown by Alaska farmers. Just stop by the info booth or market manager table when you arrive, and they’ll walk you through it. Participating markets include:
Matanuska Community Farmers Market (Palmer): Wednesdays, 4–7 PM
Homer Farmers Market: Wednesdays, 2–5 PM & Saturdays, 10–3 PM
Tanana Valley Farmers Market (Fairbanks): Wednesdays, 11–4 PM & Saturdays, 9–4 PM
South Side Farmers Market (Fairbanks): Tuesdays, 4–6:30 PM
For a full list of markets, visit alaskafarmersmarkets.org.
If you’re age 60 or older and meet income requirements, you may also qualify for the Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program. From July 22 to October 31, eligible seniors can receive $40 through a QR card to spend at approved farmers markets and roadside stands.
These cards can be used to buy Alaska-grown:
Fresh fruits and vegetables
Fresh-cut herbs
Honey
To find out if you qualify or to get your card, contact your local senior center or call our program coordinator at 907-222-3119 or email programs@foodbankofalaska.org.
Shopping local doesn’t just benefit your wallet. It’s good for your health, your community, and Alaska’s economy. Every time you buy from a local farmer, you’re helping keep money in our state and supporting small businesses that make our communities stronger. You’re also cutting down on how far your food travels and getting produce that’s often picked the same day you buy it. That means more flavor, more nutrients, and more meals you can feel good about.
Food Bank of Alaska is here to help you get the most out of your food budget this summer. Whether you're looking for information about SNAP, senior benefits, or where to find a market near you, we're just a call or click away.
