Honoring our 2024 Hunger Action Champions

Hunger Awareness and AdvocacyVolunteer Spotlight • 4 min read • Sep 19, 2024 8:30:00 PM • Written by: Cara Durr

Each year, Food Bank of Alaska nominates a select group of Hunger Action Champions- individuals, businesses, and organizations that have made an extraordinary impact in the fight against hunger across our state.

These champions have demonstrated profound commitment to providing support, resources, and advocacy for our mission to combat hunger and food insecurity in Alaska.

From generous donors and dedicated volunteers to partner agencies on the front lines and policymakers driving meaningful change, we are proud to recognize this year’s honorees:

Melina Sevigny

Former Food Bank of Alaska Board President

2024 Hunger Action Champions 2

Melina served as a vital advocate for our mission during her seven years on the Food Bank of Alaska’s Board of Directors. As Board President, she led us through pivotal moments, including the acquisition of our new facility, the distribution of millions in infrastructure funding to partner agencies, and the hiring of our CEO, Cara Durr. Her leadership has left a lasting legacy in our efforts to alleviate hunger across Alaska.

Eddie Ezelle

Former CEO of the Mat-Su Food Bank

2024 Hunger Action Champions 4

With 16 years of leadership at the Mat-Su Food Bank, Eddie’s unwavering commitment to hunger relief extended far beyond the organization itself. As a key figure in the Mat-Su Food Coalition and Alaska Food Coalition, he advocated for impactful policies, attended legislative events, and contributed to community outreach. Eddie’s work with organizations like the Wasilla Chamber and Susitna Rotary further highlights his deep involvement in the community.

Deb Etheridge

Director, Alaska Division of Public Assistance

2024 Hunger Action Champions 9
Deb stepped into her role during a challenging period, tackling substantial delays in the distribution of SNAP benefits. Under her leadership, improvements have been made to address the backlog and implement long-term changes. Along with her team, Deb has been instrumental in ensuring that Alaskans receive the vital support they need during times of food insecurity.

Erin Walker-Tolles

Executive Director, Catholic Community Services

2024 Hunger Action Champions 6

Erin’s dedication to social services spans over two decades, including eight years with Catholic Community Services (CCS) and 14 years with the Alaska Division of Public Assistance. Under her guidance, CCS provided over 131,000 free meals to seniors last year alone. Erin also played a crucial role in the passage of Broad-Based Categorical Eligibility, making her an inspiring leader in the fight against hunger in Alaska. We are honored to recognize Erin’s incredible work.

Meals to You Program Partners

2024 Hunger Action Champions 7

The Meals to You program has been a critical initiative, delivering nutritious meals to children and families in need, even in the most remote parts of Alaska. This program wouldn’t be possible without the collaboration and dedication of partners such as McLane Hunger Solutions, the Alaska Department of Early Education and Development (DEED), and Baylor University. Their commitment has made a significant impact on ensuring that no child goes hungry, no matter where they live. We deeply appreciate the work of all Meals to You partners.

Karl Wilhelmi

Longstanding Volunteer at Food Bank of Alaska

2024 Hunger Action Champions 8

For nearly three decades, Karl has been one of Food Bank of Alaska’s most dedicated supporters. His financial contributions have provided tens of thousands of meals, and his countless hours of volunteer service have helped strengthen our fundraising efforts. Karl’s talents extend beyond his financial and volunteer support, as he has also shared his musical gifts at many of our events over the years.

2024 Hunger Action Champions 5

Greg’s leadership at the Kenai Peninsula Food Bank has not only expanded its reach but also significantly enhanced its programs and capacity. His visionary guidance has made a lasting impact on both the organization and the community it serves. As Greg retires, we celebrate his remarkable contributions and the legacy he leaves behind. Thank you, Greg, for your dedication and leadership.

Senator Cathy Giessel

Alaska State Senate Majority Leader

Senator Cathy Giessel has been a tireless ally in the fight against hunger. Her legislative work was instrumental in the passage of Broad-Based Categorical Eligibility, simplifying the SNAP application process and raising income thresholds for Alaskans. Her efforts reflect her strong belief that no one should face barriers when it comes to accessing food. We honor Senator Giessel for her critical role in advancing food security.
