SNAP Works. Cutting It Will Hurt Alaska.

Thank you, Alaska Food Policy Council for providing the actionable resources below, including talking points, sample script and contact information.

SNAP is a cornerstone of Alaska’s food security—and it works. Every dollar in SNAP benefits generates $1.50 to $1.80 in local economic activity, helping support grocery stores, farmers markets, and small businesses. In 2023, 553 Alaska retailers redeemed over $281 million in SNAP, fueling jobs and stabilizing communities.

If Congress moves forward with these cuts, it won’t eliminate need. It will just make that need harder to meet, and push more families into crisis. Food pantries are already at capacity. When SNAP is slashed, we see it in real time: longer lines, higher demand, and increased strain on volunteers and donated food supplies.

We can’t fill the gap. No food bank can.

SNAP doesn’t just reduce hunger.

It protects public health, strengthens rural economies, and keeps families moving forward. If Congress cuts SNAP, Alaska will feel it first and hardest.

Sample Script

Hi, my name is [Your Name], and I live in [Your City/Town], Alaska.
I’m calling to ask [Representative/Senator’s Name] to please oppose any budget proposals that would cut SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
In Alaska, one in ten households relies on SNAP to help put food on the table.
That includes nearly 20,000 kids.
Cutting this support would not only hurt families, it would hurt our rural economy too.
Every SNAP dollar brings in about $1.50 to $1.80 in economic activity.
Food banks and pantries are already stretched thin.
They can’t make up the difference if SNAP is cut.
The hunger won’t disappear just because the funding does.
Please protect SNAP.
It helps working families, veterans, elders, and people with disabilities.
It improves health, reduces hunger, and gives people a path out of poverty.
